Augustus, born Octavius, was Rome's first emperor. Upon the death of his adoptive father Caesar, Augustus was deemed the "son of a god" and took up his perilous inheritance at the age of 18. The would-be heir arrived in Rome only to find he was ignored by the senate and shut out of the treasury by Marc Antony, but the vestiges of Caesar's dictatorship vastly underestimated Augustus. With the help of the brilliant admiral Marcus Agrippa, Augustus eventually defeated antagonizers Marc Antony and Cleopatra, executed his rival heir, and laid claim to the throne. With this victory, Augustus reorganized Roman government and transformed the dying republic into a monarchic regime, granting himself absolute control.
